Coherence Training Helps Veterans Improve Cognition and Reduce Pain
A 2014 issue of Global Advances in Health reports a study showing that HRV coherence training reduced perceived pain, stress, negative emotions, and limitations of activity in veterans suffering from chronic pain. In another study discussed in Alternative Therapies Journal, training with visual HRV feedback, breathing techniques, and induction of positive emotions resulted in major improvements in emotional control, attention, and other cognitive functions. Although these were small studies, they have important implications for the benefits of HRV training."

National Wellness Week
September 17–23, 2012 is National Wellness Week, which is part of National Recovery Month. SAMHSA is encouraging "individuals, families, and communities across the country to improve their health behaviors, while also exploring their talents, skills, interests, social connections, and environment to incorporate other dimensions of wellness."
Join me in signing the Pledge for Wellness!
You can sign as an individual, provider, or an organization.
As a Behavioral Health Provider, I pledge to:
TALK WITH PEOPLE WITH MENTAL AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS about the importance of following up on blood work and other
medical tests—especially when a person is taking psychiatric medications.
BE AWARE of glucose levels, weight loss or gain, blood pressure, sleep patterns, and metabolic levels when treating peers and persons in recovery who take psychiatric medications.
BE AWARE of possible past trauma(s) that peers and persons in recovery may have experienced, and be aware of their emotional and social states and general happiness or unhappiness.
REFER PEERS AND PERSONS IN RECOVERY to needed resources, such as smoking cessation tools and peer support and recovery
services, if applicable.
ADVISE PEOPLE WITH MENTAL AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS about ways to improve health—a nutritional diet, daily exercise, making social connections, and avoiding nicotine, alcohol, and other substances.
INQUIRE about how people with mental and substance use disorders are integrating aspects of the Eight Dimensions of Wellness into their daily lives.
I support the Wellness vision and take the Pledge for Wellness.
